07 · Jump Start
How to jump start a car battery safely
Two methods, side by side: traditional jumper cables (you need a second car) and portable jump starter packs (you do not). Connection order matters. Disconnection order matters more. Get either wrong and you risk arcing, electrical damage, or worse.
Before you start
- · Wear safety glasses. Battery acid is corrosive.
- · Remove rings, watches, and any conductive jewellery.
- · No open flames, no smoking near the battery (hydrogen gas).
- · Both vehicles must have keys removed and parking brakes set.
- · Inspect the dead battery for cracks, leaks, or swelling. If you see any: do not jump.
Method A · Jumper cables
Connect, run, disconnect
- 01Park the working car nose-to-nose with the dead car. Both engines off, both keys out.
- 02Red clamp to the positive (+) terminal of the dead battery.
- 03Red clamp to the positive (+) terminal of the working battery.
- 04Black clamp to the negative (-) terminal of the working battery.
- 05Black clamp to a clean unpainted metal ground on the dead car (engine block bolt, lifting eye). Not the dead battery's negative post.
- 06Start the working car. Let it idle 2 to 3 minutes.
- 07Start the dead car. If it won't crank, wait another 5 minutes and try again.
- 08Once running, disconnect in reverse order: black from ground, black from working battery, red from working battery, red from now-running car.
- 09Drive the jumped car at highway speed for 30 minutes. Do not turn it off.
Method B · Portable jump pack
No second car needed
- 01Verify the pack is charged (most show LEDs or a percentage).
- 02Red clamp to positive (+) battery terminal.
- 03Black clamp to a clean unpainted metal ground (not the negative battery post).
- 04Power on the pack.
- 05Start the car. Most packs deliver enough current for 5 to 10 attempts before recharging.
- 06Power off the pack, disconnect black first, then red.
- 07Drive 30 minutes at highway speed to recharge the battery.
Buying a pack
$50 to $150 range. Look for at least 1000 peak amps for a 4-cylinder, 1500+ for V6, 2000+ for V8 or diesel. USB charging output and a flashlight are useful extras.
After
After the jump
- ✓ Drive at highway speed (above 45 mph) for at least 30 minutes.
- ✓ Do not turn the engine off until you are confident the battery has charged.
- ✓ Get a free load test within 48 hours. A battery that needed jumping is rarely fine.
- ✓ Plan for a replacement if the battery is over 3 years old.
Do not jump
When jumping is unsafe
Cracked or leaking battery
Acid leak risk; possible explosion
Frozen battery
Frozen electrolyte expands and can rupture the case
Visibly swollen / bloated case
Internal gas buildup; replace, do not jump
Hybrid or EV high-voltage battery
Different procedure; consult owner's manual
Battery older than 5 years showing failure
Replace; jumping is a temporary stopgap
