01 · Warning Signs

8 warning signs your car battery is dying

3 tiersof urgency

Sorted by urgency. Critical signs (red) mean replace now, moderate signs (amber) mean test soon, and the age check (yellow) means schedule annual load tests. The same eight symptoms cover roughly 95% of all dying-battery diagnoses.

SIGN 01TEST SOON

Slow engine crank

Cause
Weakened cells cannot deliver the burst of current the starter needs.
Confirm
Listen for a sluggish or laboured cranking sound. Test cranking voltage with a multimeter; it should never drop below 9.6V.
Next step
Have the battery load-tested at AutoZone, O'Reilly, NAPA, or Advance Auto. Free in about 5 minutes.
SIGN 02TEST SOON

Dim headlights at idle

Cause
Battery cannot maintain voltage under accessory load. The alternator partly compensates.
Confirm
Headlights brighten when you rev the engine. If they stay dim, suspect the alternator instead.
Next step
Test resting voltage (should be 12.6V or higher). If lower, charge and retest.
SIGN 03REPLACE

Dashboard battery warning light

Cause
Charging system fault detected. Could be battery, alternator, or wiring.
Confirm
Light is illuminated steady or flashing red while driving. Check engine-running voltage; should be 13.5 to 14.5V.
Next step
Drive directly to an auto parts store for a free charging-system test. Do not turn the engine off.
SIGN 04REPLACE NOW

Swollen or bloated case

Cause
Overcharging or extreme heat has caused internal gas buildup.
Confirm
Battery case visibly bulges on the sides. Often warm to the touch.
Next step
Stop using the vehicle. A swollen battery can leak acid or rupture. Replace immediately.
SIGN 05CLEAN FIRST

Corroded terminals

Cause
Acid vapour reacts with terminal lead. Returns quickly if the battery is venting.
Confirm
White, green, or blue crust on positive or negative posts.
Next step
Disconnect, scrub with baking soda paste and a wire brush, reconnect with anti-corrosion grease. If corrosion returns within weeks, replace the battery.
SIGN 06REPLACE

Bad rotten-egg smell

Cause
Sulfuric acid leaking from a cracked case or boiling cells.
Confirm
Strong sulphur odour near the battery, often with visible moisture or discolouration.
Next step
Replace the battery. Do not attempt to charge or jump-start a leaking battery.
SIGN 07REPLACE

Frequent jump starts needed

Cause
Battery can no longer hold a charge between drives.
Confirm
Two or more jump starts in a month, or a single jump after 12+ hours parked.
Next step
Replace immediately. A battery that needs jumping has failed regardless of voltage reading.
SIGN 08TEST ANNUALLY

Battery is over 3 years old

Cause
Capacity drops sharply between years 3 and 5 even without other symptoms.
Confirm
Check the date code on the battery label (month / year format on most brands).
Next step
Have it load-tested every 12 months. Replace proactively before failure when the test shows marginal.
