How to test a car battery

5 minutesand a $15 multimeter is all you need

A digital multimeter ($10 to $20) gives you a reliable battery health reading in under 5 minutes. The voltage chart below interprets the reading, and the cranking test confirms whether the battery can deliver current under load.

Reference Chart · Tab 2.1

Resting voltage chart

Resting voltage is read at least 30 minutes after the engine was last running, with all accessories off. A fully charged 12V lead-acid battery reads 12.65V or slightly higher. Below 12.0V the battery is effectively dead and will not reliably start a cold engine.

VoltageState
12.65 V or higher100% charged, healthy
12.45 V to 12.64 V75% charged
12.24 V to 12.44 V50% charged
12.06 V to 12.23 V25% charged
11.99 V or lowerDischarged or failed

Procedure · 6 steps

Multimeter test, step by step

  1. 01Turn off the vehicle and all accessories. Wait 30 minutes after driving so the surface charge dissipates and you read true resting voltage.
  2. 02Set the multimeter to DC voltage on the 20V range.
  3. 03Connect the red probe to the positive (+) battery terminal.
  4. 04Connect the black probe to the negative (-) battery terminal.
  5. 05Read the voltage on the display and compare to the chart below.
  6. 06For a cranking test, start the engine while watching the meter. Voltage should not drop below 9.6V during cranking. If it does, the battery cannot deliver adequate starting power.

Engine-running test

Verify the alternator

With the engine running at idle, voltage should read 13.5 to 14.5 volts. Below 13V means the alternator is not charging. Above 15V means the regulator is overcharging, which damages the battery quickly.

OBD-II scanner

Read voltage from the dashboard

A Bluetooth OBD-II adapter ($15 to $30) plus an app like Torque or Car Scanner displays real-time battery voltage while you drive. Useful for catching intermittent charging-system problems that a static reading misses.

Where to get a load test

A professional load tester applies a calibrated load and measures voltage drop. It catches weak batteries that pass a static voltage check.
